Nineteen straight Montenegrin titles, the most recent sealed for 2025–26, tell only part of what Budućnost is doing in the Morača valley these days: the league season has become a formality, and the club's ambitions run toward Europe, where it once stood among the continent's best. That standing rests on two EHF Champions League titles, in 2012 and 2015, won when Budućnost was competing directly with the western European clubs that now outspend it many times over.
The club traces back to 13 February 1949, formed inside the multi-sport society SD Budućnost, and its record since then reads as continuity rather than a series of separate eras. Domestic dominance did not begin with Montenegrin independence — Budućnost had already collected four Yugoslav Championships and fourteen more once the competition became FR Yugoslavia's, plus a run of cups to match. When Montenegro got its own league in 2006–07, Budućnost simply carried on winning it, along with the national cup, every season since.
Cristina Neagu and Andrea Lekić both wore the club's colours before their names became fixtures on the international game's biggest stages, a reminder that Budućnost has long served as a launching point rather than a final destination for its best players. Zoran Abramović took over as head coach in late 2025, succeeding Bojana Popović, at a club that had just come through a genuine financial scare: when the sponsor BEMAX withdrew in 2024, the City of Podgorica stepped in to take over the club's founding rights and keep it running.
Known as the Blues, in blue, red and white, Budućnost plays before the Varvari at the Morača Sports Center, a 6,000-seat venue in Podgorica that has watched most of this history unfold, with the smaller Bemax Arena serving as an occasional alternative.
