Buriram United

Buriram United did not begin as a football club looking for silverware; it grew out of the works team fielded by Thailand's Provincial Electricity Authority, playing under that name in Ayutthaya from 1970. Four decades on, in 2010, the local politician Newin Chidchob took the club over and shifted it wholesale to Buriram province, where it competed briefly as Buriram PEA before dropping the electricity authority from its name in 2012 to become Buriram United.

The move gave it a home strong enough to earn its own nickname, the Thunder Castle, now known as Chang Arena and holding 32,600 in the club's dark blue and pink. Under Alexandre Gama the side swept the league, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Kor Royal Cup in the same season twice running, in 2014 and 2015; under Masatada Ishii it managed the same feat as a treble, in 2021–22 and again the year after. In the years since, its tally of Thai League 1 titles has reached eleven.

Its sharpest rivalry is with Muangthong United, a fixture read locally as rural Buriram against urban Bangkok, though the derby itself has never been given an official name. The crest carries the imagery of the nearby Phanom Rung Historical Park, and the academy opened in 2011 has so far produced two players who made it into the first team, Suphanat Mueanta and Supachok Sarachat — a thin return set against everything the senior side has already won.
