Cienciano go into the season back in Peru's top flight, the place they returned to in 2019 after winning the Second Division.

The club has never actually won the Peruvian league outright — three finals lost, in 2001, 2005 and 2006 — yet it walked away with the shorter Apertura and Clausura tournaments split across those same years.

None of that explains why the name travels. In 2003, under coach Freddy Ternero , whose "¡Sí se puede!" became the line attached to that whole campaign, Cienciano beat River Plate in the final of the Copa Sudamericana. Paraguayan defender Carlos Lugo scored the goal that decided it. A year later they beat Palmeiras to add the Recopa Sudamericana, with Argentine goalkeeper and captain Oscar Ibáñez leading the side that carried both trophies.

Locally, the fixture that still matters most is against FBC Melgar of Arequipa, known as the Clásico del Sur.

Cienciano was founded on 8 July 1901, not around a factory or a neighbourhood but around a school — students of the Colegio Nacional de Ciencias del Cusco, the National School of Sciences, put the club together and took the name from what they studied. "Cienciano" translates roughly as a man of science, and among those credited with starting it was an English teacher, William Newell, working at the same school.
