Compostela

Luis Enrique wore Compostela's blue-and-white shirt in the 1990s before Real Madrid came calling, and for a club that spent barely four seasons in La Liga, that is still the name people reach for. The team he passed through had been playing in the third tier a decade earlier and climbed to the top flight only in 1993-94, beating Rayo Vallecano 3-1 in the promotion play-off. Under Javier Irureta the side settled into the division rather than merely visiting it, and the 1995-96 campaign brought a tenth-place finish, the highest Compostela ever managed among Spain's elite.

That version of the club, born from a 1962 merger between Sociedad Recreativa Compostela and Club Arenal, folded in 2006 under financial strain. It came back two years later, recognised again in 2007, and picked up where the old crest had left off in one respect at least: winning the Tercera División, first in 2008-09 and again in 2017-18, the same competition it had topped three times in its earlier life.

Compostela plays as "Esedé" now, still in the split blue-and-white shirts that earned it the "blanquiazul" tag, at the Estadio Municipal Verónica Boquete de San Lázaro — renamed in 2018 for the Santiago-born forward. The ground holds 16,666.
