Salalah has one derby that matters, and Dhofar have owned most of it: they share the Al-Saada Stadium with Al-Nasr, the club in blue, and the fixture between them still carries the name Dhofar Derby regardless of which ground hosts it. Players have crossed between the two sides over the years, Jamal Mohamed and Younis Al-Mushaifri among them, which only sharpens the rivalry rather than softening it.

The club did not start out as Dhofar. It began in 1968 as Al-Shaab, "The People," and took its present name only after merging with a neighbouring outfit, Al-Shoala, in 1970. Formal registration with the Omani Football Association followed on 20 May 1972, and that date, not the earlier one, is the one the club counts as its founding.

No club in the country has won more. Eleven league titles, the first in 1982–83, run through to 2018–19, and eleven Sultan Qaboos Cups stretch from 1977 to as recently as 2023. Dhofar have never dropped out of the top flight since. The nickname Al-Za'eem, "The Bosses," is not modest, but the record backs it up.

The closest the club came to a continental trophy was in 1995–96, when they reached the final of the Gulf Club Champions Cup and lost to Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr. Domestically, Lawson Bekui's goals were central to breaking a long gap between league titles in 2016–17, a title that opened a small run of further honours rather than a one-off.

What Dhofar have not managed is to turn that domestic weight into anything abroad. The 1996 final remains the club's only appearance near continental silverware, and nothing since has come close to it.
