Salalah sits at the southern edge of Oman, cut off from the rest of the country by desert until the monsoon turns the Dhofar hills green each year. Al-Nasr grew out of the Al-Haffa district, where the game started on the beach before anyone thought to lay grass, and it carried the King as its nickname once it took shape. A merger with Al-Shate'a in 1972 pushed the club's base to Al-Jouf and fixed the name it plays under now, though the founding itself traces back to 1970, when Sheikh Bakhit Said AlShanfari set it up.

Across the city, Dhofar SC has provided the other half of the story since the same year. A run of Sultan Qaboos Cups in the 2000s and 2010s kept the club near the top of the domestic game, but the sharper memory is the drop into the Second Division in 2010–11, the first relegation in the club's history. They came straight back up the following season, finishing second, and returned to winning cups within a few years, taking the Oman Super Cup in 2018 not long after the League Cup double of 2015–16.

None of that changed the colours: light blue with white has stayed the shirt since the beach games in Al-Haffa. Home matches are played in front of 20,000 seats at Al-Saada Stadium, though the club has also turned to the smaller Salalah Sports Complex and the Salalah Youth Complex when needed, grounds that hold a fraction of that number but sit closer to the districts where the King first found its supporters.
