Before there was a football club there was a cricket pitch: the Dordrechtsche Cricket Club took the field on 16 August 1883, and the football side emerged, taking the name Dordrechtsche Football Club in 1899.

In January 1981, with the team going by DS '79, Johan Cruyff turned out for three friendlies against Chelsea, Ajax and Charleroi.

Two Dutch Cup wins, in 1914 and 1932, sit at the top of the honours list. The club's one taste of European football came in the 1992 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Colours drifted with the names: yellow and blue under DS '79, green under Dordrecht '90, before the red shirts and white shorts returned with the FC Dordrecht name in 2002.

Games are still played at Stadion Krommedijk, a ground holding 4,235 that now carries a sponsor's name attached to it.
