Emmen's handball association took shape in 1933, and it settled on the name Emmen en Omstreken, E&O for short, still known locally as De Emmenaren. The most recent drop came after 2023/24, when the team finished bottom of the Eredivisie on two points and could not survive the relegation round.
Lois Abbingh came through between 2006 and 2010, and Tess Wester passed through the same pipeline a few years later.
The rivalry that matters most is local rather than national: Hurry-Up, from nearby Zwartemeer, in what's known as the Drenthe Derby.
