In Volendam handball has carried two shirts under one roof since the club's earliest years as the Rooms Katholieke Handbalvereniging Volendam, established on 12 January 1963. The men's section kept that name, RKHV Volendam; the women's side is known as KRAS Volendam.

The New Year's fire that swept through Volendam in 2001 pulled the men's team out of competition altogether, its attention turned to relief efforts in the town rather than results. Professionalisation began in 2004 under Joost Ooms, and the trophies followed almost immediately: seven Eredivisie titles between 2005 and 2013, and the BENE-League three years running.

The women's team has taken longer to find its level, reaching the Eredivisie Women only after promotion in 2018 and settling for a best finish of seventh, in 2021/22.
