Flensburg-Handewitt

SG Flensburg-Handewitt grew out of a 1990 merger between the handball sections of TSB Flensburg and Handewitter SV.

The old Wikinghalle gave the club its nickname, Hölle Nord — Hell North — for the noise it produced, and the team carried that name with it after moving on, first to the Flensburger Förderhalle in 1991 and then, in 2001, to what is now the Flens-Arena.

That rivalry produced the club's biggest night: in 2014, Flensburg-Handewitt beat Kiel 30-28 to win the EHF Champions League. Domestically, the Bundesliga titles of 2018 and 2019 came under Maik Machulla, back-to-back championships that marked the club's strongest league spell. Machulla was sacked in 2023, and it was his successor, Nicole Krickau, who led the team to the EHF European League title in 2024.

Lars Christiansen remains the name most associated with the club's rise, and more recent squads have built around players such as Lasse Svan and Johannes Golla. The current group plays in the Bundesliga with the European League title from last year still fresh, and the Nordderby against Kiel remains the fixture by which the season is measured.
