Winning the 2. Liga was the last step of a climb that began in the eighth tier, where the football side restarted in 2013 after bankruptcy proceedings ended competitive play altogether.

For five of those seasons the team could not use its own name. The GAK brand was tied up with the debts, so the reorganised football section played as GAC — Graz Athletic Club — until the historic name came back in 2018 as GAK 1902. In 2022 the football section lost its separate legal status and was folded back into the parent sports club, which is where it had started: a football department inside a multi-sport association in Graz .

The one league title arrived in 2004, and it came alongside the Austrian Cup. Before any of that, in the amateur era, GAK were the first Austrian side to take the national amateur championship, in 1929, and won it twice more in the four years that followed.
