Guadalajara Chivas

The Estadio Akron sits outside Guadalajara proper, in Zapopan, a bowl built specifically for a club that had spent decades playing elsewhere and wanted a home of its own. It opened in 2010 under the name Omnilife, ran briefly as Estadio Chivas, and has held its current name since 2017; for the 2026 World Cup its capacity will be trimmed from 49,813 to 45,664 to meet tournament requirements. The ground carries the club's colours through and through, because Chivas has never really needed to borrow prestige from elsewhere — since 1906 it has run on a policy almost unheard of in modern football, fielding only Mexican-born players.

That policy is the whole identity. It produced Omar Bravo, the club's all-time leading scorer with 132 goals, and it produced Javier Hernández, who left the academy and became known worldwide simply as Chicharito. Rafael Márquez came through the same pipeline, as did Carlos Vela and Carlos Salcedo. No import has ever worn the badge, which makes every title on the shelf — 12 Liga MX championships, the last of them in 2017, along with four Copa México wins and two CONCACAF Champions League crowns in 1962 and 2018 — a domestic product in the most literal sense.

Continental football has not always gone their way: Chivas reached a Copa Libertadores final in 2010 and came up short. What has never faltered is the pull of two fixtures at home. The Clásico Tapatío against Atlas is the oldest derby in Mexican football, a Guadalajara-against-Guadalajara argument that predates most of the club's honours. The other is louder: the Súper Clásico against América, the most-watched match in Mexican football, where a squad built entirely from within the country lines up against the club most associated with buying talent from wherever it can be found.
