Hapoel Karmiel first took the field in 1964.
The club folded in 2008. A year later it returned through a merger with Tzeirei Salfit, playing under the joint name Karmiel/Salfit, only for that arrangement to dissolve in 2016. Hapoel Ironi Karmiel took shape in 2019 as the town's latest attempt to keep a senior side going, and it now plays in Liga Alef at the Karmiel Municipal Stadium, which holds around 700.
What the current side has built its name on instead is conduct on the pitch — five straight seasons as Liga Alef's Fair Play champions, a run that sent Karmiel to represent Israel at the UEFA Regions' Cup in 2011, 2013 and 2015. On the field, third place in the North Division in 2013–14 remains the high point. Across town, Maccabi Karmiel provides the local derby.
Eran Shainzinger came through Karmiel before his career took him to Maccabi Netanya and Hapoel Kfar Saba and, eventually, to caps for the Israel national team.
