HC Panter Tallinn

Haabersti sits on the western edge of Tallinn, and the ice hall there has been the home of HC Panter since a group led by Rein Mölder and Olle Sildre registered the club in the summer of 2001. A title-winning run in the mid-2000s gave way to a shutdown between 2006 and 2011, a merger with the junior side HC Purikad brought the team back under the name Panter/Purikad, and by 2016 the senior squad had gone quiet again while the club concentrated on raising younger players. It returned once more for the 2020–21 season.

The Estonian championship the club won in 2003–04, beating Narva PSK in the final, is the more straightforward of its two titles. The second, in 2022–23, came with an asterisk: Panter lost the final series to the Latvian side HK Kurbads but took the trophy anyway, since Kurbads was competing as a guest club rather than an eligible Estonian entrant. The club used the momentum to move its senior team into the Optibet Hockey League, pairing it with clubs from Latvia rather than staying inside the domestic league alone.

Saveli Novikov, a defenceman who came through the club, was named the country's best Estonian player for that 2023–24 season, while Lauri Lahesalu, who has worn the Panter jersey, holds the appearance record for the national team. Games against HC Viking, the other club from the capital, are billed locally as the Tallinn Derby, and the rivalry with Viking carries more weight in the city than anything the club's results elsewhere suggest.

Panter still plays out of the Haabersti Ice Hall, a rink that holds 500 people, small enough that a derby crowd fills it without much trouble.
