Handball in Kungälv grew up under a name already taken: IFK Kungälv had carried the town's bandy tradition since 1940, so the club formed on 9 February 1970 took a separate identity, Kungälvs HK, and built its women's section into the town's representative side in the sport. Home games are settled at Mimershallen, a hall that holds no more than 600 to 700.

The one title in the club's record is a Junior Swedish Championship from 1992; a senior SM-guld or a Swedish Cup has never followed. Kungälvs HK has managed staying power: nine seasons in Handbollsligan spread across three spells — 1998 to 2000, 2004 to 2007, and an unbroken run since 2018 — with an eighth-place finish in the 2018–19 playoffs standing as the best of them.
