Llanuwchllyn

Cae Gwalia holds around 1,000 people, a hundred of them under cover on a single stand, in a village that does not stretch much further than that. In the summer of 2026 the ground had reason to fill: Llanuwchllyn finished top of Ardal North East and earned a first promotion into Cymru North, the club's highest league placing since it was formed in 1957.

It has not been an unbroken climb. Llanuwchllyn joined the Welsh National League's Wrexham area section in 1963 and won Division Three at the first attempt, a strong start that the club could not sustain indefinitely — financial trouble broke it up altogether in 1986, three years before it was pieced back together in 1989. The Ardal title nearly forty years later closed that gap in a way the club's history had not managed before.

Meilir Williams has driven much of the recent run: he finished as Ardal League North East's top scorer in 2023/24, again in 2024/25, and once more in 2025/26, the kind of consistency that turns a promotion push into a formality. Around him, goalkeeper Rob Dascalu and midfielder Ilan Hughes both made the division's team of the season in 2024/25, giving the side a spine that held up across three campaigns rather than one good year.

The club still measures itself against Bala Town and against Dolgellau Athletic, a fixture with no fixed name attached to it but treated locally as a derby all the same. Cymru North is a different level of football to what Llanuwchllyn has played before, and after a collapse once already cost the club its place in the game altogether, staying up will say more than winning the league did.
