Newtown grew up as a market town on the Severn, in the hills of mid Wales, and for much of the 1870s it had two football clubs rather than one — Newtown and White Stars, playing separately in the same small town. It was White Stars who won the Welsh Cup first, in 1878-79, before the two sides came together at a meeting in the Lion Hotel on 23 July 1884. Newtown AFC has carried the name, and the record, since that evening. The club was there at the founding of both the Football Association of Wales and the League of Wales, and it remains one of the oldest football clubs in the country.

Home matches are played at Latham Park, named for George Latham, a Newtown-born forward who won 10 caps for Wales either side of the First World War and turned out for Liverpool, Stoke City and Cardiff City before the ground took his name.

The club's best-remembered result from that era has nothing to do with Wales at all: in December 1895, forward W. Parry scored all three goals as Newtown beat Manchester City 3-2. A little under two decades later, Max Woosnam came through the same side before the First World War, then went on to captain Manchester City and win Olympic gold in tennis in 1920 — an unlikely path out of a club whose honours since have mostly stayed local: Montgomeryshire Cups won across five decades, Mid Wales League titles in the late 1970s and 1980s, and, most recently, another CWFA Challenge Cup in 2025-26.

None of it carries the weight of the fixture against Caersws, five miles down the road, known simply as the Mid Wales derby. Beyond that rivalry, Newtown's honours board is built almost entirely from regional and county competitions; a Welsh Cup has not returned to Latham Park since 1895, and the League of Wales title the club helped set up in 1992 has still eluded it.
