The side is put together for a competition and taken apart afterwards, which is why no founding date attaches to it; the federation behind it dates from 23 August 1927, and the first Concacaf entry came in 1962.
Fourteen Concacaf under-20 titles have followed since.
The wider reputation was built elsewhere. Mexico reached the final of the 1977 world under-20 tournament and lost it to the Soviet Union on penalties.
The nickname El Tri comes from the three colours of the flag, and in 2023 the federation lost the commercial rights to it after a lawsuit brought by a music group. Supporters kept using it regardless.
