Nîmes Olympique sits fifty kilometres east along the same stretch of Languedoc, and the Derby du Languedoc between the two is a regional argument, settled on the pitch, about which city speaks for the area.

Montpellier itself grew out of a merger. Stade Olympique Montpelliérain, founded in 1919, had already won the club's first Coupe de France in 1929 and played in the inaugural professional season of 1932 before joining forces with AS Paillade in 1974 to form the club as it now stands. The nickname stuck from that second half of the name — La Paillade, still used by supporters who call themselves Pailladins.

The single Ligue 1 title, won in 2011–12, remains the club's high point in the top flight. A second Coupe de France followed in 1990, then the Coupe de la Ligue in 1992 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1999.

Home games are played at Stade de la Mosson, in the club's blue and orange.
