Montpellier held on for a narrow 1:0 win against Puy at the Stade de la Mosson on Friday evening, the result of Ligue 2's sixth round. The hosts took all three points through a second-half goal, while the visitors could only manage a point-draw in their away record.
There were no openings until the seventy-second minute, when Theo Sainte Luce found the net to settle the contest. Before that, the match unfolded with plenty of yellow cards but little else — five bookings in total, with Montpellier taking two and Puy three. The visitors threw bodies forward but struggled to break through.
And here's the thing about match statistics — they don't always tell the full story. Montpellier dominated possession at 74 per cent and registered 165 attacks compared to Puy's 41. Yet only nine shots were taken in anger, with four on target for the hosts and two for their opponents. Big chances created: zero for both sides.
Substitutions came thick and fast in the second half, with Montpellier making three changes around the sixty-third minute — Grégory Ayem, Daylam Meddah and Babacar Leye all on together. Puy responded with a trio of their own at the seventy-seventh hour, while Montpellier added two more at the seventy-eighth minute. By then, the game was effectively over.
To be fair, neither side had much to celebrate in terms of quality. Shots accuracy sat at a modest 33 per cent for Montpellier and 18 per cent for Puy. The visitors managed more tackles — thirteen to five — and made more clearances, sixteen to eleven, but that defensive work was born of necessity rather than style.
The result keeps Montpellier in fifth place with eight points from five games, two wins, two draws and one defeat. Puy remain twelfth, five points from five — one victory, two draws, two losses. Neither side has moved the needle much, but the hosts at least pulled ahead of the visitors on this occasion.
