Nitra

The "Derby of Western Slovakia" against Dukla Trenčín is the fixture that sets the calendar apart in Nitra.

The ice hockey section traces to 1931, grown out of the broader AC Nitra sports club, and it has not always been a fixture of the top flight: relegation to the 1. Liga followed in 1999 and again in 2002, both times reversed. The team plays as Corgoni, a nickname taken from the town's Corgoň statue, a dog holding a horn.

Two Slovak Extraliga titles frame the modern era. The first, in 2015–16, came with Žilina swept 4-0 in the semi-final stage of that run; the second, in 2023–24, ended with a 4-0 sweep of Spišská Nová Ves in the final. Between them sat the IIHF Continental Cup in 2022–23, a rarer trophy for a Slovak club to bring home.

Branislav Mezei wore the captaincy through the long defensive years that shaped how the team is remembered, but it is Jozef Stümpel whose name carries furthest beyond Nitra: an NHL forward who came home to captain the side through the 2015–16 championship, closing a career in the city that started it.
