Omonia Nicosia

GSP Stadium has held Omonia's home games since it opened on 6 October 1999, a bowl on the edge of Nicosia with room for nearly 23,000 supporters, most of them dressed in the club's green and white.

Those colours date back to 4 June 1948, when a group of players and members broke away from APOEL after a political rupture inside the older club. The new side settled into a left-wing identity that has stuck ever since. Supporters call it Trifylli, the shamrock.

The 1970s and 1980s belonged to it: fourteen league titles inside twenty years, six of them won one after another between 1974 and 1979. Sotiris Kaiafas played through the middle of that run and closed 1976 with Europe's Golden Boot, still the name attached to the club's best individual season.

Money nearly undid what those years had built. By the early 2010s Omonia's debts had reached €27m, and in 2013 it was the supporters' own fundraising that kept the club alive. Five years later the football side was carved out into a separate commercial company under S. Papastavros, a restructuring that split the fanbase; part of it walked away rather than follow the old club into its new form and founded Omonia 1948. The green and white kept going regardless — Jordi Gomez, captain through the 2020s, once scored the longest-range goal in Europa League history wearing it.

No fixture carries more weight than the one against APOEL. Nicosia calls it the derby of the eternal enemies, and for Omonia it has meant that since the night the two clubs went their separate ways.
