Persik Kediri disappeared from Indonesian football in January 2015. It came back a year later in the second tier, and what followed was a Liga 3 title in 2018, promotion, then the Liga 2 crown in 2019 that put the club back among the country's top flight.

The club had been there before. Founded in 1950 by the regent of Kediri, R.M. Muhammad Machin, together with T.H.D. Rachmat and M. The 2011 restructuring that folded the club's legal entity into Minangkabau FC to meet league regulations left the Persik name and identity untouched on the pitch.

The nickname Macan Putih, the White Tigers, comes from the white tiger associated with the old kingdom of Kediri and its King Jayabaya, a piece of local legend the club wears rather than explains.

Matches against Arema FC carry the weight of the East Java derby, one of the fiercest fixtures in the country, with Persebaya Surabaya and Madura United supplying the rest of the rivalry.
