Piacenza sits on the Via Emilia, and rugby here has never lived far from that road. Rugby Lyons grew out of a meeting of students from the Istituto Tecnico Industriale on 13 September 1963, called together by Melchiorre Dadati.

What the club has mostly done since is go up and down. It has never taken the Italian top title or the Coppa Italia, and its honours board holds only two Serie A crowns, the second tier, won in 2015 and 2019. The 2015 title came at the expense of Pro Recco; four years later Rugby Lyons beat Accademia Nazionale FIR 68–7 in the second leg of the playoff final to climb back into the top flight after being relegated in 2017.

Carlo Orlandi is the name most tied to the club: a hooker who won 44 caps for Italy, he later came back to coach the side.
