About

The Italian national rugby union championship, currently known as Serie A Élite, stands as the top-tier domestic competition organized by the Federazione Italiana Rugby (FIR). Originally founded in the 1928–1929 season with Ambrosiana Milano as the first champions, the tournament has undergone numerous name changes including Super 10 and Top12 before adopting its current structure in 2023.

The competition features ten teams—Colorno, Emilia, Fiamme Oro, Mogliano, Petrarca Padova, and Rovigo, alongside three others—playing a single round-robin regular season with home and away fixtures. Following the regular season, the top four teams enter playoffs to determine the champion. This format ensures that every team faces each opponent twice during the campaign, creating a tightly contested environment for the title.

A key distinction of this competition is that Italy's two strongest clubs, Benetton Rugby and Zebre Parma, do not participate in the domestic league; they compete in the United Rugby Championship (URC), a multi-national professional league. Consequently, Serie A Élite serves as the primary domestic competition for the remaining Italian clubs, with the winner qualifying for the European Rugby Challenge Cup. This structure differs from leagues in countries like England or France, where the top domestic teams also compete in their respective national cups and domestic leagues simultaneously, while Italian top-tier clubs are integrated into a cross-border professional competition.

Promotion and relegation exist between Serie A Élite and the second-tier Serie A, typically involving one promoted and one relegated team, though this can vary due to federation decisions. The most successful club in the competition's history is Amatori Milano with 18 titles, followed by Benetton Rugby with 15. The current champion (2023–24) is Petrarca Rugby.
