Rushall Olympic

Hednesford Town sits closest on the map and closest in temperament to Rushall Olympic, and the two meet with a needle sharp enough that the fixture is spoken of as a derby rather than just another Saturday in the National League North. Stafford Rangers and Chasetown fill out the same corner of grudges, though neither carries quite the weight of Hednesford.

What became Rushall Olympic first appears in match reports from the 1893–94 season, but that club did not survive into the Second World War. It took three local men, John Edwards, Des Hyde and Graham Wiggin among them, to bring it back in 1951, and everything the club has built since traces to that restart rather than the Victorian original.

The honours board is mostly regional silver rather than national headlines: the Midland Football Alliance in 2004–05, the West Midlands Regional League Division One in 1979–80, four Staffordshire County League titles in the early 1960s. Cup competitions have been kinder in recent years — the Walsall Senior Cup and the Staffordshire Senior Cup have both gone to Dales Lane in 2023 and again in 2024. The club's furthest run in the FA Cup came only last season, when it reached the First Round Proper for the first time in its history.

Dales Lane has sent a handful of players into the professional game before Rushall Olympic could offer them much more: Zat Knight left for Fulham, Michael Kightly went on to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley, and Leon Clarke arrived the other way, on loan from Sheffield United, before his career had run its course elsewhere.

The Pics, in their yellow and black, now play their football at Step 4, in the National League North, with the FA Cup run still fresh enough to raise what the club expects of itself this season.
