Səbail FK

The ASCO Arena sits in Baku's Sabail district, a compact ground built to hold 3,200 and rebuilt for a club that had nowhere else to call home. It is often referred to by its older name, Bayıl Arena, and its low capacity has never much mattered to a side that only reached the top flight through its own results rather than any inherited weight of history.

That history is short by design. Səbail FK was formed in 2016, and within a single season in the Birinci Dəstə it finished second and went straight up to the Azerbaijan Premier League. Elman Sultanov managed that first campaign; the club has since gone through three more permanent managers, none of whom stayed beyond a handful of seasons.

The high point came under Aftandil Hacıyev in 2018–19, when Səbail finished third in the Premier League, with Aghabala Ramazanov as the club's top scorer that year, and qualified for the Europa League for the first time. It was a result the club has not since matched: league placings settled into the lower-mid table through the following years, and relegation followed the 2023–24 season, sending Səbail down to the First League for 2025–26. In the Azerbaijan Cup, their furthest run came in 2022–23, when they reached the semi-finals.

Foreign signings have shaped the squad more than academy graduates — the loan of Uganda's Farouk Miya from Standard Liège in 2017–18 remains one of the more notable arrivals. Səbail carry no fixed derby of their own, but any meeting with Sabah FK or Neftçi Baku falls under the wider Baku derby, played out in front of crowds that, at ASCO Arena, rarely stretch far beyond the ground's own modest capacity.
