São Bernardo

São Bernardo spent 2025 in Série A1 of the Paulista state championship, finishing fifth, and moved up to Série B of the Brazilian national pyramid for 2026. In the Copa do Brasil this year the team went further than ever before, reaching the fourth round.

The club was registered as São Bernardo Futebol Clube Ltda. on 5 January 2005, weeks after a group of local politicians and former players, among them ex-sports secretary Edinho Montemor, decided against reviving the defunct Esporte Clube São Bernardo or Palestra de São Bernardo. The Montemor family ran the club for over a decade until 2019, when control passed to the Magnum banking group.

Promotion came in stages rather than at a rush: Série B of the state championship in 2005, Série A2 in 2008, the state's top flight in 2010. That first taste of the elite ended in relegation the following year, despite the club drawing the third-largest crowds in the division. It took until 2012 to win the Série A2 title outright, a feat repeated in 2021. The 2021 side went further still, beating São Caetano to lift the Copa Paulista — a trophy already won once before, in 2013, when São Bernardo saw off Audax on penalties. A third cup followed in 2023, the Taça Independência, against Mirassol.

Home games are played at the Estádio 1º de Maio, known locally as the Primeirão, in front of crowds far short of its capacity of roughly 12,500. The club, nicknamed Tigre do ABC for the industrial region it represents, meets Santo André in the Clássico do ABC, along with Água Santa and São Caetano among its regular regional rivals.

For all the climb through the divisions, São Bernardo has yet to produce a player who made his name and then moved on to wider recognition — the squads have leaned instead on experienced signings brought in to push for promotion.
