Scotland's clearest mark on the international game came in the British Home Championship, the annual contest with England, Wales and Northern Ireland that ran for most of the twentieth century. Scotland won it outright 24 times and shared the title a further 17 times, a record built over decades of fixtures rather than settled in a single final.

The rivalry with England goes back further than that competition. The two sides met at Hamilton Crescent on 30 November 1872 and drew 0-0, the first international football match in history. A 3-2 win over England at Wembley in 1967 was celebrated at the time as making Scotland, half-jokingly, "unofficial world champions". Eleven years later, Archie Gemmill scored a goal against the Netherlands in a 3-2 win at the 1978 World Cup that is still the country's best-remembered piece of individual skill.

Home games are played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, which holds 51,866. Kenny Dalglish set the appearance record with 102 caps and shares the scoring record, 30 goals, with Denis Law. Silverware has occasionally come from further afield too: Scotland won the Kirin Cup in Japan in 2006.

None of it has carried the side past the group stage of a major tournament. Nine World Cups and four European Championships have all ended at that first hurdle, and qualification failed outright for 2014, 2016 and 2018. The heaviest defeat at a Euros came as recently as 2024, a 1-5 loss to Germany.
