Stal Mielec

Franciszek Gąsior, Jan Gmyrek and Robert Zawada pulled on Stal Mielec shirts before they pulled on Poland's at the 1972 Munich Olympics, three men from a squad that had reached the top division only three years earlier. The Solidność of that generation peaked in 1974–75, when Stal finished runners-up to Śląsk Wrocław, and a season before that the club had already taken the Polish Cup, in 1970–71.

The section had existed since 1952 as a branch of the factory club FKS Stal Mielec, reactivated in 1963 after an earlier collapse and promoted to the top flight in 1969. The 1980s undid most of what the 1970s built: relegation in 1979, a brief return, relegation again in 1981, and a final withdrawal from the top division in 1992. Five years later the handball side split off entirely, registered as its own association, SPR Stal Mielec, and started again from the lower leagues.

Promotion back to the Superliga came in 2006, and the club settled there long enough to take bronze in 2011–12 and reach the second round of the EHF Cup the following season. Relegation to the third tier followed in 2022; Stal returned to the Superliga for 2025–26. The Hala Sportowo-Widowiskowa MOSiR on ulica Solskiego holds 2,200.

None of it counts for as much locally as the fixture with Grupa Azoty Unia Tarnów.
