In 1945, in the middle of the French colonial period, USM Alger switched to red and black in mourning for the victims of the Sétif massacre.

Known to their own crowd as Ouled El Bahdja, "Sons of the Quarter," USM Alger have built the deepest trophy cabinet in Algerian football: eight Ligue 1 titles and ten Algerian Cups, the most recent taken off CR Belouizdad in the 2024–25 final. Continentally the club broke through in 2023, beating Young Africans to the CAF Confederation Cup and then Al Ahly for the CAF Super Cup, before repeating the Confederation Cup win against Zamalek in 2025–26 — a run that sits alongside a runners-up finish in the CAF Champions League in 2015.

Algiers gives the club two derbies rather than one: against MC Alger, the Derby of Algiers, and against CR Belouizdad, the Derby of the Two Banks. Goalkeeper Mohamed Lamine Zemmamouche holds the club's appearance record, and Youcef Belaïli's spells in the side are remembered for the kind of games he could simply take over on his own.

None of it traces back further than 5 July 1937, when Omar Aichoun and Mustapha Kaoui founded the club as Union Sportive Musulmane d'Alger.
