The clubs of Viana do Castelo have never had far to travel for a grudge. Vianense's oldest quarrel runs across town, against neighbours who have shared the same district competitions for a century. That local rivalry outlasted every promotion push and every relegation, because for most of Vianense's history the district championship was the only stage there was — the club won it seventeen times between 1924 and 1942, a run that had less to do with ambition than with there being nowhere else to play.
Founded in 1898, Vianense counts among the oldest football clubs still operating in Portugal. The one campaign that took the team beyond the region came in 1998-99, when Rogério Gonçalves had them finish top of Série A of the III Divisão Nacional, then the fourth tier.
What Vianense has produced more reliably than trophies is footballers.
The club still plays at the Estádio Dr. José de Matos, which holds 3,000, in blue and white.
