Zielona Góra's handball side plays in the I Liga, Poland's second tier, because this is the handball section of AZS UZ, the university's multi-sport association rather than a stand-alone club.
AZS itself dates to 1966, but the handball section had to wait until 1978 for a court of its own, and it has stayed tied to the university ever since.
The senior team's best league finish came in 2006/07, third place in the I Liga.
Almost sixty years after AZS was founded, the handball section still plays out of that same 1,500-seat university hall.
