About the player
Celtic turned a loan into a permanent deal in July 2024, taking up their option on Paulo Bernardo for £3.5 million and signing him to a five-year contract. He had arrived from Benfica the previous September on loan and won the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup in that first season, playing 33 times in all competitions. The 2024–25 season brought another league title, together with the Scottish League Cup.
Bernardo joined the Benfica academy in 2010 and signed his first professional contract in 2018. His senior debut came in 2020 with Benfica B, for whom he played 38 matches and scored seven goals. In autumn 2021 he was named Liga Portugal 2 Midfielder of the Month for October and November, and he made his first-team debut for Benfica that same November.
His first loan came in January 2023 at Paços de Ferreira, where he made 13 appearances before moving to Scotland later that year.
For Portugal he has played at U15, U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels, scoring 17 goals in 72 youth caps.
In August 2026 Celtic sent him on loan to Górnik Zabrze, where he is due to stay until June 2027.
