«The Crew»
ScottsMiracle-Gro Field has carried that name only since it opened in July 2021; before the switch it played as Lower.com Field. For more than two decades before either name existed, Columbus called Historic Crew Stadium home, from 1999. Capacity figures for the current ground depend on who is asked: the club's own site lists 20,808 seats, while the stadium's site gives 20,139, a gap accounted for by the 3,362 standing places in the Nordecke end.
The new stadium arrived after a period when the club very nearly stopped existing in Columbus at all. In 2017 owner Anthony Precourt began pushing to move the Crew to Austin, and supporters organised under the banner #SaveTheCrew to resist it. The team stayed only once the Haslam family bought the club in 2018; Precourt went on to found Austin FC instead. A rebrand to Columbus SC followed in 2021 and lasted only months before the club reverted to its original name.
Three MLS Cups sit in the club's history, won in 2008, 2020 and 2023, alongside three Supporters' Shields from 2004, 2008 and 2009. A U.S. Open Cup followed in 2002, a Campeones Cup in 2021, and a Leagues Cup in 2024. Since FC Cincinnati entered MLS, the two clubs have contested the Hell Is Real derby; before that, Columbus measured itself against D.C. United.
All of it started on 15 June 1994, when Columbus was named one of the ten founding clubs of Major League Soccer, two years before its first match was played, in 1996.
