Denton Diablos

Denton is a college town in north Texas, home to the University of North Texas. Its Day of the Dead festival gave the Diablos their name and their red and black. The team plays on the university campus, at Mean Green Soccer Stadium, and it was built by two men with different vantage points. Damon Gochneaur is a Denton native who runs a sports agency. Michael Hitchcock runs a management company and had worked with D.C. United, LA Galaxy and FC Dallas. They split ownership 50/50, and the club was announced as a National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) expansion side in September 2018.

The pandemic cancelled the 2020 season's Open Cup, and the club spent that winter winning the Roja League, a preparation competition. That work fed into 2021. The Diablos took the Lone Star Conference and the West Region, then beat Tulsa Athletic 5–2 in the national final. Sam Coad, who had played college football at UNC Greensboro, was the team's top scorer and its most valuable player that year.

As NPSL champions, Denton represented the league in the 2022 Hank Steinbrecher Cup, the national amateur competition. They reached the final and lost 2–1 to Flint City Bucks. Brayan Padilla, who came through the FC Dallas academy, scored in that final and later played in USL League One. Sebastian Mendes had scored a hat-trick earlier in the tournament.

For 2025 the club left the NPSL for USL League Two, in the Ranger Division. Roy Lassiter, who scored 27 goals for Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1996, a single-season MLS record, and won the MLS Cup with D.C. United in 1999, is head coach.

Denton have held the Chisholm Trail Clásico, the physical belt contested against Fort Worth Vaqueros, in every season from 2021 to 2024.
