There was no city, no founder, no single ground to name — the DFB set the national side up in 1900 to represent a country still finding its footing in the sport, and the team took the field for the first time on 5 April 1908 in Basel, losing 5–3 to Switzerland. White shirts and black shorts, the colours it still wears, came from the Prussian flag rather than any local club.

What followed took shape less around a stadium — matches are still spread across the country, though Berlin's Olympiastadion and Munich's Allianz Arena carry the most weight — and more around a run of tournaments. Fritz Walter led the side to the 1954 'Miracle of Bern', the first of four World Cup titles, followed by 1974, 1990 and 2014. Between those came three European Championships, in 1972, 1980 and 1996. Reunification in 1990 brought East German players into the setup, among them Matthias Sammer, who won the Ballon d'Or in 1996 playing as sweeper. The 2014 win, under Joachim Löw, leaned on players drawn largely from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and included a 7–1 semi-final demolition of Brazil before a 1–0 final against Argentina.

Miroslav Klose remains the side's all-time top scorer, with 71 goals, but the record most often cited alongside his is Lothar Matthäus's 150 caps, a mark that has stood since his last appearance for the team in 2000, at the 1990 World Cup he helped win. Franz Beckenbauer captained that generation's predecessor in 1974 and later managed the side to the 1990 title itself, the only man to have done both. Joshua Kimmich now wears the captain's armband, with Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz carrying the side into its next tournaments.
