Two local associations in Loulé merged their sporting and social activities into a single body on 6 June 1923, with Dr Frutuoso da Silva as its first president. The scope widened after the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, when the club added basketball, chess and athletics sections. Its clearest football result came in 1976/77, when the Iniciados youth side, built entirely from boys at local schools, reached the national final and lost 2-0 to Porto.
The club send an Olympian into the pool rather than onto the pitch: swimmer Miguel Pires competed at the 2004 Athens Games.
Home matches are played at the Estádio Municipal de Loulé, which holds 5,000; the club has at times shared the larger Estádio Algarve with Sporting Farense, but the municipal ground remains its base.
