Antonio Carbajal was the first player to appear in five World Cups. The Mexican Football Federation was founded in 1927 and joined FIFA in 1929. The national team plays mostly at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, which holds 87,523 and is also called Estadio Banorte for sponsorship reasons.
The nickname El Tri comes from the "TM" on the shirts, which reads like "Tri", short for Tricolor. The name also fits the green, white and red of the flag.
In the World Cup, Mexico's best result is the quarter-final, reached twice, in 1970 and 1986. Both tournaments were played at home.
Mexico has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup ten times, the first in 1993 and the latest in 2025. The CONCACAF Nations League followed in the 2024–25 season. Brazil has been the opponent in two of the team's best results. Mexico beat them 4–3 in the 1999 Confederations Cup final. At the 2012 London Olympics it won gold with a 2–1 win over them. At Tokyo in 2020 the team took bronze, beating Japan 3–1.
Several players stand out in the team's history. Hugo Sánchez scored 29 goals in 58 caps. Rafael Márquez played 147 times and won the UEFA Champions League. Javier "Chicharito" Hernández is the team's leading scorer. The United States is the rival that matters most, and the fixture is known as the Clásico. Costa Rica and Argentina come next.
The World Cup itself has never been won.
