Norway have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, and this time the team is set for its best finish at the tournament, a quarter-final, after only three previous appearances, in 1938, 1994 and 1998.
The team played its first international on 12 July 1908, in Gothenburg, and lost 3–11 to Sweden. That result set the tone for a rivalry that has run for over a century, still commonly called the Nordic derby rather than by any name of its own, though it has produced its share of Norwegian triumphs.
The high point remains 1936, at the Berlin Olympics, where Norway beat Germany in the quarter-finals, lost to Italy in the semi-finals, then took bronze with a 3–2 win over Latvia. Reidar Kvammen and John "Brimse" Andersson were part of that side.
John Arne Riise still holds the appearance record, but the current era belongs to Haaland, the side's all-time top scorer, and to Ødegaard as captain. Norway wear red shirts with white shorts and blue socks, the colours of the flag, and play their home matches in Oslo.
