1996 to 2001 set the standard the current side is still chasing back to. That run began under the Castle Rovers name — a club raised by Irish civil service staff, already champions of the Dublin Women's Soccer League in 1995 and 1996 before Shamrock Rovers absorbed it in 1996 and carried the trophies forward as its own. The league title alone came seven times in that span, and by 2002-03 the team had become the first women's side to represent the Republic of Ireland in European competition, in the UEFA Women's Cup.
None of that continued past the club's entry into the Women's National League in 2011-12. Two bottom-place finishes later, Shamrock Rovers Women withdrew at the end of 2013-14, and the shirt stayed off the pitch until November 2022, when the club rebuilt the team for the 2023 season under Collie O'Neill and signed Stephanie Roche as its marquee name.
The revival has yet to produce a trophy. Third place in the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division in 2023 gave way to fifth in 2024, with semi-final exits in the FAI Women's Cup in both 2023 and 2025, and a penalty-shootout defeat to Galway United Women in the 2024 Women's All-Island Cup final. Against Bohemian FC Women, whose rivalry with the Hoops traces back to 1915, the derby carries weight regardless of the table. The squad now mixes academy graduates such as Ella Kelly, playing home matches at Tallaght Stadium, whose new North Stand opened in 2024 as part of a €7.7m upgrade.
What the club is trying to get back to is the version of itself that existed before any of this: the works team founded by civil servants, playing in the green-and-white hoops the men's side had already made its own since 1926.
