Melissa Nelson and Emily Thomas, together with their husbands, ran the project from an introductory press conference on 28 April 2022 to a first competitive season in the Women's Premier Soccer League the following year.

SFCFC took the WPSL Northern Conference title in 2023 and again in 2024. A perfect 9-0 record through the regular season carried them to the top of the national rankings for several weeks. Hosting the Central Region playoffs that July was as far as it went — a 3-3 draw with FC Pride in the semi-final, lost on penalties.

Mia Mullenmeister carried the attack that year, finishing as the club's leading scorer and picking up the conference's Player of the Week award along the way. Two seasons earlier, Katharina Oelschlaeger had arrived from Germany and left with 14 goals and four assists to her name.

Bob Young Field, on the University of Sioux Falls campus, holds 5,000. Sioux Falls City remain the only professional women's side in the state, so there is no derby waiting for them; instead, the move into the USL W League for 2025 put them in the same division as Minnesota Aurora and River Light, the closest thing they have to rivals.
