Paso de la Arena, on the western edge of Montevideo, gave the club its name before anything else did. Sportivo Huracán grew out of the neighbourhood and has stayed tied to it since, playing under the Huracán del Paso de la Arena nickname that still marks it out from the capital's bigger, older sides. It was formally set up on 1 August 1954, a modest date compared with the founding years claimed by Montevideo's grand clubs, and it has spent most of its life since in the lower tiers of Uruguayan football rather than among them.

The club's own ground, Parque Bossio, holds 2,000 people, a number that says plenty about the scale Huracán operates at. This season it cannot even use that number: Parque Bossio lacks the licence from the Uruguayan Football Association to host official matches, so the team is playing its home games at Parque Palermo, on loan from Central Español.

Huracán currently sits in the Segunda División, Uruguay's second tier, still waiting on the ground clearance that would let it come home.
