Match report

Arsenal saw off Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday evening, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions. The Gunners had beaten Manchester City 3-0 just five days earlier and now moved to second in the Premier League table with six points from two games. Coventry, meanwhile, remain bottom of the table after two defeats with zero points.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, and here's the thing about this performance — Arsenal looked comfortable from the start rather than fighting for momentum. Bukayo Saka added a second just eight minutes later in the 23rd, and by then the visitors were already on the back foot. Martin Ødegaard sealed it in the 49th minute, putting the result beyond doubt before half-time had even been reached.

Coventry's Caleb Yirenkyi picked up a yellow card in the 27th minute, and Gabriel Magalhães followed suit for Arsenal in the 34th. The hosts made several changes after the break — Declan Rice and Saka were both withdrawn in the 68th minute, while Ødegaard came off in the 76th. Coventry brought on Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante in the 70th, then added Lamine Tchaouna later on.

The statistics tell their own story. Arsenal dominated possession at 64 per cent and created more chances, but their expected goals of 1.88 suggests they should have scored more than three. Six shots on target from 12 attempts gave them a 50 per cent accuracy rate — efficient enough, but not devastating. Coventry managed only one shot on target from three attempts, and their expected goals figure of 0.2 says everything about their attacking threat.

What stood out was how Arsenal controlled the tempo rather than chasing the game. They completed 565 passes compared to Coventry's 271, and their 180 passes into the final third showed a clear intention. The visitors made 64 long passes — nearly double Arsenal's 32 — which often indicates a team under pressure falling back on direct play.

The result leaves Arsenal second with a four-point gap over whoever sits above them, while Coventry's defeat keeps them rooted to 17th place. Two losses from two games is a difficult start, and the goal difference of -3 will need addressing quickly. Arsenal, by contrast, have won both matches and are already building momentum.
