Sturm Graz edged LASK Linz 2-1 at Merkur Arena on Saturday in the Austrian Bundesliga's sixth round. The result closed a gap between fourth and first place, with the visitors losing ground at the summit. LASK had won five of their previous six league matches, yet this fixture followed a different script entirely.
The opening quarter was defined by controversy rather than play. George Bello went down in the penalty area and LASK were awarded a spot-kick, only for VAR to cancel it after review. Jurgen Heil collected a yellow card in the same period, and the visitors were left wondering what might have been.
Sturm took the lead through Gizo Mamageishvili in the thirty-fourth minute. LASK responded well and Krystof Danek equalised just before half-time, his goal arriving at 45+3. The break brought a familiar pattern: the home side quiet, the away side pressing.
And here's the thing — the second half flipped the balance. Oumar Diakité gave Sturm the lead in the fiftieth minute, and from then on LASK chased. They threw bodies forward, won corners, pushed the ball into the final third. But the finish was missing.
The statistics tell the story without needing embellishment. LASK held 66 per cent possession, completed 398 passes compared to 250, and launched 90 attacks against 78. They registered 16 shots off target and only four on. Sturm took 12 shots with seven on target, a far more efficient return.
By then the match was slipping away from the visitors. Otar Kiteishvili stood over a penalty at 90+6 minutes and missed. Three yellow cards fell on the eighty-fifth minute as frustration mounted. The result leaves LASK top of the table with 15 points, but the gap to Sturm has narrowed to four.
