About the player
Marcelo Pitaluga spent five years at Liverpool without ever making a competitive first-team appearance. He began at Vasco da Gama's futsal section at the age of eight, switched to football at eleven and moved into Fluminense's academy, where he stayed until 2020. He was named among the substitutes for the first team four times without playing a competitive league match before Liverpool signed him for an initial fee of around £700,000, with Fluminense keeping a 25% sell-on clause.
The loan spells that followed had contrasting outcomes. At Macclesfield Town he made 26 appearances in total and helped the club win the Northern Premier League Division One West title. At St Patrick's Athletic, results went the other way: he conceded six goals in four league starts and the loan was ended early, though he still picked up the Leinster Senior Cup with the club. A brief stint at Livingston brought a single appearance, a Scottish League Cup defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
He returned to Fluminense permanently in January 2025, signing until the end of 2028. At Liverpool he had been an unused substitute in the finals of the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, and with Brazil's youth sides he was reserve goalkeeper when the under-17s won the 2019 World Cup, collecting a winner's medal without playing in the tournament. He has represented Brazil at under-15, under-16 and under-17 level but has not been capped by the senior national team.
