Bergamo had waited long enough by the time the final whistle went in Dublin in May 2024.

The club holds the record for the most seasons spent in Serie A without ever winning it — 65 of them — and its one Coppa Italia came back in 1962-63, when Angelo Domenighini scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Torino. Five times the club has finished top of Serie B, most recently in 2010-11, and five times it has come up short in Coppa Italia finals, the latest in 2024.

A football section followed in 1913, and the club joined the Italian federation the year after. In 1920 it merged with the fencing society Bergamasca, which had itself absorbed the local club Bergamo, and the black shirts of Atalanta combined with the blue of Bergamasca to produce the colours the club still wears.

Cristiano Doni remains the club's leading scorer across two spells, with 55 goals in 145 appearances, while Marten de Roon overtook Giampaolo Bellini for the most appearances in the shirt in March 2024. The fiercest rivalry runs against Brescia, in what Bergamo knows as the Derby di Lombardia. Atalanta has now gone 65 seasons in the top flight without a Scudetto.
