České Budějovice U20

The junior side of HC Motor České Budějovice plays in the Junior Liga, the top tier of Czech under-20 hockey. That comparison worked in the players' favour in 2022–23, when the U20 side took the Czech Junior Extraliga title, a result the senior side has never matched at the top level — its closest calls came with bronze in 1994–95 and 2007–08.

The academy's real currency, though, is the players who pass through it. David Pastrňák, Michael Frolík and Ondřej Palát all came up through České Budějovice before making the NHL, and Václav Prospal followed the same path in reverse: voted the club's best player by its own supporters, then returned to coach.

Games against Pardubice carry weight beyond the standings. The clubs' fixture is known as the "Válka piv" — the War of the Beers — after the breweries in each city, Budvar and Pilsner Urquell's neighbour.

The senior club last won a domestic title in 1951, under Czechoslovakia, and has not added an Extraliga championship since. For the academy, the task is to keep sending players through fast enough that the next Pastrňák arrives before that gap gets any longer.
