Nidaros

Trondheim's ice hockey identity collapsed in 2014, when Rosenborg IHK, the city's elite club, went bankrupt. Within months a new organisation, Nidaros Ishockeyklubb, formed on 14 July 2014 with the explicit goal of bringing top-flight hockey back to the city.

Nidaros won the 2. Divisjon in 2015–16, then took the 1. Divisjon regular season in 2016–17. The breakthrough came in 2024–25: a first-place finish followed by promotion playoffs that Nidaros won, securing the club's first-ever place in the EliteHockey Ligaen.

David Hallström finished as the franchise's all-time leading scorer with 248 points. Ole Christian Westad Larssen topped the club's charts for games played, assists and total points across 272 appearances.

Nidaros plays out of Leangen Ishall, a 3,000-seat rink it shares with Rosenborg IHK, which itself was reconstituted after the bankruptcy. The two clubs meet as the city's hockey rivals, though the fixture has never picked up the kind of name attached to Trondheim's football derby.

What the club has not yet done is prove itself at the level it fought eleven years to reach.
