Second place in the Slovak 1. Liga is as high as Prievidza's hockey has climbed, and it happened in a single season, 2003–04, without ever forcing the door to the Extraliga open. Even that standing came apart in 2014, when financial trouble forced a withdrawal from the second tier and a drop to the third.

The team that finished runner-up wasn't even wearing the name it carries now. The club has been renamed eight times — Tatran, then Baník, then Banské Stavby, then a run through Polygon, MšHK and Bulldogs before settling back on HC Prievidza in 2015 — and the 2003–04 side played as MšHK Prievidza, a name it held for only eight years.

Marek Mendel sits above everyone else who has pulled on the shirt, holding the franchise records for points, goals and assists. The city's hockey has also sent players out: Róbert Lantoši was born in Prievidza and went on to play in the Extraliga for HK Nitra and HC Košice, though not for the club that raised him.

Games against HK Partizánske carry the weight of a derby locally, sharpened by geography. Prievidza itself skated its first match back in 1954, against Pravenec.
